Through culturally grounded learning experiences, mentorship, and field-based exposure, young people will gain the tools, knowledge, and networks needed to lead and thrive in their future careers.

The Tappin Roots (Emergent Leaders) Fellowship: College Cohort is a hands-on leadership program for college students ages 18–22 in the Portland–Vancouver Metro Area. Running from September 2025 through June 2026, the fellowship offers participants a $9,000 stipend for a commitment of 10–15 hours per week. Open to students of all majors enrolled at colleges in Oregon or Washington, the program provides a unique opportunity to gain professional experience while developing skills as future leaders.

In lieu of a traditional cover letter, we welcome creative submissions! Here are some examples:

  • A short video or narrated slideshow connecting your academic studies, cultural background, or campus leadership experiences to ELSO’s mission.

  • A blog-style post or zine page you create about a time you helped mobilize students or peers around sustainability, equity, or outdoor learning.

  • A one-page infographic or mind map showing how your skills, courses, and personal values intersect with community-based environmental work.

  • A recorded audio note or podcast snippet describing what draws you to serve as a bridge between campus life and local communities.

  • A photo essay with captions reflecting how your culture and education have shaped your view of environmental justice or public engagement.

  • A short poem or letter to your future self about what you hope to grow through this internship.
